Her Keeper : One Shot Wednesday: One Stop Poetry

My sister doesn’t sleep

I want to say
Are you still afraid–of the night?
but she’d kill me if I knew.

My sister doesn’t sleep

I lay awake imagining
the chemicals that flood
her brilliant mind, dousing
her down to a caged animal
that’s half-beating.

My sister doesn’t sleep.
I wait for dawn to meet her.

She tells me without words
that there’s a price to pay
when you forge bravery;
there’s a debt that’s owed
to your soul when you
abandon it to danger.

Her dark eyes–those
faceless moons–tell me
somehow I’d been right
to hide in the dark

  1. I like how this repeats. There is such mystery here makes me want to know what the danger is and what’s keeping her awake!

Wow. This is a powerful message for me. As a bipolar I male I can relate to sleepless nights. As I write this I am embarking on my sixth consecutive night of one to two hours of sleep and I know my mania can go only one way once it has reached it’s peak.

The chemicals that flood my mind are lithium, wellbutrin, zoloft, zyprexa, seroquel, klonopan…and more. I wonder why I can’t sleep.

Oh, and my sister can sleep. Also bipolar I she took her own life with the demonic pills that were meant to be her salvation.

Sorry to get off on this tangent…I really just needed to say I was moved by your beautiful writing.

*By the way, I had a problem signing on to week 24 last week so my comments are a bit late. Sorry, but I’m certainly glad I signed on now…*

    1. Wow. First–I’m so sorry about your sister. I hope you’re ok–well, as ok as you can be with it. I can’t imagine.
I’d also like to say thanks for your honesty and openness–a quality I greatly admire of people suffering with bipolar. The more we talk, the less the stigma. Thanks for reading. I truly appreciate your comment. It’s the people like you that are the reason I write this blog. Thanks! Amy Jo

  5. Oh, this is rich. Especially the last two stanzas. Wow. I got up to let my dog out, but I think perhaps now I’ll go put my head under the blankets again.

My ex-spouse had periods of mania, so believe me, I get this, and you’ve really written something impressive here.

  9. Growing up with an abusive step father with no protection leaves you to find your own bravery and ways of hiding. I read my sisters poem and find its a mix of us. Reading the comments, it is sad…the innocence lost. Children shouldn’t have to lose their innocence, not to any one. No one should be able to take that from another.
